Dear Friends,
I only have a few minutes till puppy play time...
A kind breeder returned my e-mail to first confirm that Mama is a German Shepherd, not a Belgian Malnois.
The important inform he shared was telling me several simple commands in German. Well, to our surprise she responds to
OWTTAH
SEETZ
we have not yet tried the others because mama is a retriever Extraordinaire.
Actually it is something you have to see. She brings this old blue rubber toy bone to me, then stands right foot raised about 2 inches off the ground- some kind of waiting stance. I threw it and she took off running over her own puppies.
Her intensity of concentration or fixation if you will is something I have never seen.
The problem is I have yet to find a word to tell her to relax and she will continue to return the toy over and over.. and over.... placing it on the outside chair then looking at me, following me to the washing machine she stood up and dropped it into the washer! I had to fish it out as Mama was ready to jump onto the washer and go fishing herself
I am sure she has a pre trained routine but I do not know what it is.
MaMa is clearly highly intelligent and agile. I just cant believe that her owner is not looking for her. (sigh)
The pups are all doing beautifully!
IF anyone knows anything about training and commands please leave a message or e-mail me.

We made it through!!
The NEW SETUP-mama and pups in the garage-lots of room warmth and even a bench so mama can rest above the pups as she appears to be pretty much fed up with nursing.
Lady is fine; however she has 2 cuts on her face. I sense her feelings, her pride, our hurt far more then her body.
We rotate shifts of mama and pups outside and jack and lady inside. Poor Lady cries to go out when the family is out. I am relieved to see Mom and pups are happy , and calm inside the safety of a big closed space.
Everyone slept peacefully last night (Thank God !) We discovered a talent Mama has from her life prior to coming here. I will share this my next post-time to check on the pups.

well Dear Friends...., despite the peaceful look of the pup shot I posted last night, Mama was howling and growling most of the night.(big sigh from me) ( F$%#!!!!!!) from my Dh)
This morning during a food and water refill, Lady got out. I grabbed mamas lead; but, my Lady would not move away from the Mama. An awful confrontation ensued in which Lady was bitten on her nose and lost a tooth!!
The humane society director is not at the facility, as she told me she would be, and the worker said we need to hold them at least 5 days to ensure they are healthy. I explained the situation to her and she said she would call "the boss" on her cell phone; however cannot promise a call back.
IM SUCH AN IDIOT!
WE SHOULD HAVE GONE AHEAD AND BUILT A SECURE KENNEL BEFORE WE PICKED THEM UP.
I was finally able to get Lady into our house, and raise the garage door allowing Mama and the pups outside. They are out there together- peaceful for the time being-Thank God.
Any ideas and, or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Mama and puppies are safe and warm in our home . It is requiring tremendous strategy to ensure she and our Lady are separated. We tried having both on leads outside without babies; however, Mama was still ferocious. I am hoping with lots of food, calm and love, she will settle down
Tomorrow I will be tap dancing to keep track of my house full of canines!
Keep the prayers coming Wonderful FLickr Friends

my visit to the animal shelter yesterday was upsetting. Mama is refusing to nurse her puppies-and nips at them if they try to eat from the feeding dish. Of course we have had a cold winter storm since last evening-so it is much colder and wet then normal here in the desert. I keep sending then warmth and strength in my prayers;but, i cant stand thinking of all of them hungry and cold.
We have our Atrium all set up for them. It is 8x10 and leads right into our living space.
Oh get here Monday!

My 2 hr visit to the animal shelter was a whirlwind of emotion. The shelter director was kind, patient and clearly well experienced.
First, mama and the babies are in an outside spacious pen, with a huge Rottie( very sweet guy, impounded 3 times and now parent's refuse to pic him up) to her left, and 2 pit bulls to her right. Beautiful-healthy dogs everywhere!
The precious pups were all huddled inside an igloo shelter. At first I felt angered that they were not inside from the cold, but my Dh pointed out the fresh air , sunshine, and not being enclosed are beneficial to not catching serious illnesses. Also, the outside pen is significantly larger then inside pens.
Mama was visibly stressed. She licked my hand and looked into my eyes.
I was overwhelmed looking at al the beautiful animals in this section- full bread Rottie-huge mastiff- beautiful chocolate lab-I listened as the kind director explained how many of the full breads are repeated impounds who's owner refuse to pay to retrieve their animals.!
Not to digress... It was clear that their could be no guarantee of mama and babies survival. The director gave me suggestions on how to build a makeshift pen . I did not know how we would do it, but my commitment to their survival was driving me as I called my Dh to explain the plans. Legally the shelter has to hold all animals 5 days for claim time-Monday is the day

After 2 vicious altercations between Lady and the Mama, my DH called animal control, who promised they would go to our local NO KILL SHELTER.
Instead they were brought to The Yucca Valley Animal Shelter, where animals are killed regularly.
Here is the letter I have sent out to rescues
I am reaching out in hopes of finding a safe place for a female Belgian German Shepherd. IT would be easier if you read the full story on my blog-pictures of her are there
lifeinthedesert.typepad.com/life_in_the_desert/
I Live in Joshua Tree California. 2 days ago my dogs dug up the burrow where 7 beautiful puppies were. Their mom appeared the next morning searching for them. I had to call the animal rescue because this dog and my female Shepard mix had a violent altercation when my dog was trying to help with the puppies.
Despite her rather ferocious appearance she was gentle yet frantic with me.
I have since learned the Yucca Valley Animal Shelter IS NOT A NO KILL shelter . They will hold her the legal 4 days for a possible owner to claim her and then determine her adoptability.
I am just heart sick over this and am trying every way I know possible to make sure no harm comes to her or her 7 little pups.
I took tomorrow off to go see them at the shelter and will get an update them
This photo has notes. Move your mouse over the photo to see them.

Mama tensed and snarled then lunged at Lady!

Mama though frantic licked and nuzzled me. She was fine with Jacks presence,BUT Lady's proximity caused her to snarl and growl. Before I could get Lady onto a lead.....

the biggest of the bunch-she was the first to haul herself over the edge of our blanketed bathtub after we had settled them all snuggled upon a big, down, comforter, and soft blankets.

The story began around 4pm today while I was out on the front property shooting the clouds over the JTNP. High pitched-ear piercing yelps came from the back property. I thought i heard them yesterday, but wrote it off as ..well...hearing things-there are many anonymous yelps and barks to be heard at any day or night in our desert. Jack and Lady were barking frantically and digging at the gate that leads to our unfenced back acreage. The yelps stopped as I hooked their leads and opened the back gate. Both Jack and lady were frantic pulling toward the debris from old sheds that were knocked down years ago. Jack immediate began whimpering and digging frantically.......

the yelping began again-the familiar sound of puppies! What do I do? there must be 15 large heavy pieces of old shed pieces. Lady joined Jack in the digging as I heard more tiny yelps add in the symphony of fear! Like the protective mother i am, I began lifting then hurling each board. careful to make sure they did not land back on the pile!.....

Jack was exhausted so Lady stepped in and continued the frenzied digging. I became concerned that one wrong move could lead the remaining boards to cave in.

Jack had reached the puppies (the yelping stopped)-and i had 2 more boards to move. I was very careful in doing this (though my lower back is telling me other wise now!)

both Jack and Lady are wagging their tails as I lift the final board to find....
